Alternate Theory Breakdown: Is Rachel the Real Villain in Trap?

We rewatched Trap last night (saw it in theaters when it came out but forgot a lot — it’s been over a year). Now I can’t stop thinking about it. Here’s why I believe that — at least for Spencer’s abduction — it might be Rachel, not Cooper… or that they were in it together.

Clue 1: The White Car vs. Cooper’s OCD

Cooper’s Routine:

• Always drove a black car.
• Was extremely OCD — wouldn’t break his own patterns.

Rachel’s Car:

• Hers was white — the same color used in Spencer’s abduction.
• This breaks Cooper’s pattern but matches Rachel’s.

Clue 2: Rachel’s Reaction to the Abduction Video

• She watches the footage of Spencer being abducted with calm fascination.
• There’s no panic or horror — just focus.
• Could be emotional detachment… or emotional fulfillment, similar to how Cooper enjoyed revisiting his crimes.

Clue 3: The Mysterious Concert Ticket

• Rachel claims she left the ticket, but sounds uncertain.
• Cooper is too meticulous to have left a trail like that.
• Was this ticket a setup by Rachel to trap Cooper before he could expose her?

Clue 4: Rachel’s “Feeling” — A Subtle Confession?

• She tells authorities she had a bad “feeling” she couldn’t shake.
• The film implies it’s about Cooper.
• But what if the “feeling” was actually her own urge to harm Spencer?

Clue 5: The Poisoned Pie

• Rachel says she poisoned the pie after finding something in Cooper’s bag.
• But Cooper had never used carbon monoxide before — this was a new MO.
• Perhaps it wasn’t Cooper escalating — it was Rachel, using her own quieter, deadlier method.

Clue 6: The Girl on the Bridge and Conflicting MOs

• Cooper’s crimes were bold and public (e.g., pushing a woman down stairs, the bridge body, explosives).
• Spencer’s death was slow, hidden, quiet — completely different from Cooper’s style.
• Suggests Spencer wasn’t killed by Cooper — but by Rachel.

Clue 7: The Brewster Street House

• Cooper says he never killed anyone there, just fantasized.
• Claims he saw Rachel there twice, then never returned.
• Was Cooper disturbed by what he saw Rachel doing? Did he distance himself out of fear?

Clue 8: “Because of Her, I’ll Never See My Kids Again”

• Cooper says this line with bitterness.
• The surface interpretation: she turned him in.
• The darker one: her actions crossed a line — she killed Spencer or others, dooming their family forever.

Alternate Theory Possibilities

Theory 1: Rachel Is the True Butcher

• Cooper may be a disturbed fantasist, but Rachel committed the crimes.
• His writings, OCD, and rituals were a red herring.
• Rachel was the real monster hiding in plain sight.

Theory 2: Both Are Guilty — In Different Ways

• Cooper: showy, bold, craves attention.
• Rachel: quiet, calculated, cold.
• Spencer may have triggered her darker side — she kills, and lets Cooper take the fall.

Theory 3: Rachel’s Darkness Is Psychological

• She didn’t commit physical murder — but she’s twisted by trauma.
• Her obsession, reactions, and decisions are shaped by something deeply broken inside.
