Is Twisters a Sequel, Prequel, or Reboot of Twister (and is it any good)?

Twisters Review: A Storm of Mixed Emotions

“Twisters” brings the whirlwind of storm-chasing back to the big screen with a new cast and a fresh take on natural disasters. As a standalone sequel to the 1996 classic “Twister,” it attempts to capture the heart-pounding excitement and drama that made the original a beloved hit.

One of the standout elements of “Twisters” is its impressive special effects. The tornado sequences are visually stunning, creating an immersive experience that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The film does an excellent job of integrating the destructive power of nature with high-stakes action scenes, making for some truly thrilling moments.

The story introduces new characters, led by Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate, a meteorologist with a traumatic past. While Edgar-Jones shows promise, her performance at times feels lacking in emotional depth, particularly in more intense scenes. Some viewers may find her portrayal less convincing, especially when compared to the more seasoned actors in the cast.

However, the film shines with its supporting characters, especially the charismatic and humorous “redneck” team of storm chasers. Glen Powell, playing the charming and daring Tyler, stands out with his blend of wit and rugged good looks, adding a refreshing dose of humor and appeal to the narrative. This dynamic team brings an enjoyable contrast to the more serious aspects of the story, making their scenes some of the most memorable.

Reflecting on what could have made “Twisters” even better, a nod to the original cast would have been a fantastic touch. Even brief cameos or subtle references to characters from the 1996 film could have added a layer of nostalgia and continuity. Introducing a character as the child of the original storm chasers would have created a compelling connection between the two films, delighting longtime fans.

The plot touches on contemporary issues like climate change, adding a layer of relevance to the disaster movie genre. However, the storyline follows a little too closely to the original, lacking enough differentiation to truly stand out. Some scenes, such as the one in the theater where Tyler holds his teammate, fall short in emotional connection compared to similar moments in the original. The decision to remove the romance in favor of portraying a strong female protagonist, while commendable, sometimes feels forced and diminishes the emotional depth. Additionally, the musical score in “Twisters” isn’t as memorable as that of its predecessor, missing the opportunity to create a lasting impact.

In summary, “Twisters” is a mixed bag. Its visual effects and action sequences are top-notch, delivering the adrenaline rush fans expect. The supporting cast, particularly the redneck storm chasers, adds charm and entertainment value. However, the lead performance may not resonate with everyone, and the film’s close adherence to the original’s formula, along with less impactful emotional scenes and a forgettable musical score, may leave some viewers wanting more. Despite its flaws, “Twisters” is worth a watch for its thrilling spectacle and engaging moments, especially for fans of disaster movies. With a bit more homage to its predecessor and a unique twist on its narrative, it could have soared even higher.
